The Physical
Education and Health Department at Washington High School Prov
ides a comprehensive program for all students. The mission of
the physical education program is to produce graduates who understand
the effects of exercise on the human body, enjoy regular exercise,
and maintain a desirable level of physical fitness. Washington
High school provides a number of physical education experiences
for students including; aquatics, creative movement, lifetime
sports, and weight training. Aquatics and
creative movement classes are offered at different levels once
mastery in the general class is achieved.
Beginning
with the 1998 school year Washington instituted a freshman swim
curriculum. All freshmen are required to take one semester of
Basic Aquatics. Aquatic classes are taught in conjunction with
the American Red Cross - Learn to Swim guidelines. Classes focus
on stroke development, basic survival and rescue techniques, aquatic
fitness and aquatic games. For students wishing to advance further
in aquatics, Intermediate Aquatics is also offered. This class
is a continuation of basic aquatics and explores on a more in-depth
level, stroke proficiency and aquatic fitness. Survival and rescue
techniques are reviewed and intensified.
Since 1992
when Washington first introduced Creative Movement, creative movement
classes have been an integral part of the physical education curriculum.
Students in creative movement classes perform at a variety of
school events and take part in exchanges with professionals from
local dance and performing arts groups. Students explore the dynamics
of a variety of dance styles and origins. Ballet, African, modern,
and hip-hop are just a sampling of this popular class.
Lifetime Sport
Classes are oriented toward life-time skills. An understanding
of fitness and wellness concepts are emphasized. Units offered
include golf, badminton, archery, team handball, volleyball, and
ultimate frisbee.
Weight Training
classes are designed to give students an understanding of their
own body. Emphasis will be placed on the development of muscular
strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Special attention
is made to designing one's own program, stretching, weight room
safety, and pre/post testing.
The mission
of the Comprehensive Health Class Program is to develop positive
attitudes towards the student's own belief in her/his ability
to control their health and well-being. Students study the components
of the wellness wheel (physical, emotional, spiritual, social,
and mental health) to develop an understanding of how each component
relates to their lives. Throughout the course, students will be
exposed to a number of community health agencies and their services.
