Professional
Learning Communities
Washington
High School is building Professional Learning Communities whose sole
focus is learning. We embrace the following tenets:
-
We
accept learning as a fundamental purpose of our school and therefore
are willing to examine all practices in light of their impact on
learning.
-
We
are committed to working together to achieve our collective purpose.
We cultivate a collaborative culture through development of high
performing teams.
-
We
assess our effectiveness on the basis of results rather than intentions.
Our
Professional Learning Communities include:
Academies
Departments
Guidance Services
Since
we believe that "learning" is the primary purpose of WHS,
we focus on three critical corollary questions:
- What do we
expect students to learn?
Have we collaboratively decided on outcomes for each course?
Are these outcomes standards based?
Are they in fact being taught? by each teacher?
How do we know?
- How will we
know that students have learned?
Have we collaboratively developed common assessments in order to determine
the extent of student learning?
- How will we
respond when students have difficulty learning?
What support systems have we collaboratively developed to assist students
in their learning?
