A Review of Mark Twain's
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain embarks the main character, Huckleberry Finn, on an adventure that led him into a moral dilemma. Huck fakes his own death to get away from an abusive father and those in town who have plans to civilize him. While running away Huck meets a runaway slave named Jim whom he'd been a friend with. This is where there's a dilemma. Should he, Huck, help Jim runaway? Huck will struggle with this question repeatedly as he and Jim travel. Even when Huck has made up his mind to help his friend, he always doubts whether it is the right thing to do.

Huck not only steals things for survival but also when it is unnecessary to do so. This shows that Huck is still a boy and not above a bit of mischief. Huck uses his family many times by pretending that they have been killed or hurt at the spur of the moment to protect others, mainly Jim. By using his family to protect Jim's identity one can see that Huck really cares for Jim and does not want him hurt even if Huck believes he will go to hell for it. Although Huck is only a young boy, he sincerely cares for others.

While Huck and Jim are away from society and alone, Huck can be as free with his affections and treat Jim however equally he wants. It is only when Huck is around or near others that the carefree behavior and freeness is stifled.

Mark Twain shows us how hypocritical America can be in its thoughts and ideas of others when its own behavior is questionable, not only in its racism towards African Americans, but also foreigners. One cannot truly ever be free when in society because one must always work to live up to society's ideas of what is right and wrong.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an interesting read and has truly become a classic but when written it may have been seen as radical thinking. I would recommend this book to any one who enjoys a good book and who enjoys being a conscientious reader.
