Dear Abby,

I am a twelve-year-old boy and I have a problem. I have this friend, I'll call him "Jim". The problem I have is society sees Jim as a slave. I see him as an human being and a friend. Jim's owner, Miss Watson, was going to sell him, because somebody offered a high price for him. Jim ran away and now he wants me to help him, escape to Cairo so he can be free. The problem is if I help him, both he and I will be killed if we were to be caught. Abby, I am really confused. Should I or shouldn't I help Jim escape? Please help!!!

Sincerely,

H.
Dear H,

I can see that you are torn between wanting to help a friend and not wanting to get into trouble for helping him. You have to think of the pros and cons of this situation. First, by helping Jim escape you are helping him break free of the chains the government has bound him with. Now think of the con side. If you help Jim you will not only be risking his life, but your own life as well. You have to remember that Jim is your friend, and friendship is one of the most important things in life. If you are willing to risk your life to help free Jim, then I advise you to do so. I'm sure, given the chance, he would do it for you as well.

Abby
