Washington High School's Academy of Science and Health English class, along with classes at five other schools around the country, were picked to view an Open Heart Surgery on March 20th, 2003, between 9 and 11:30 a.m. As part of a pilot project, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago connected by video conference about 20 interested students from the Science and Health Academy with Chicago's Christ Advocate Hospital to view a middle aged female having double bypass heart surgery.

Before the operation the class spent several days doing activities to get ready for understanding the medical procedure. During the televised operation, the doctor in charge talked through the whole procedure. He gave clear details about all the things he did during the surgery. There were many questions asked by students from the five locations. After the surgery the students discussed the surgery and wrote letters to thank the patient for giving permission for her surgery to be used as a learning experience for all of us.

As a final activity the class designed brochures to promote teen awareness of the causes of coronary heart disease.
