UW-Stevens Point Undergraduate Education Majors Visit
October 16, 2003
Reactions

A group of about a dozen undergraduate education majors from UW-Stevens Point visited Washington High School on October 16, 2003. These prospective teachers visited many classroom all around the school. What follows is a sampling of their reactions to what they saw. We think you'll enjoy their comments.

  • I really like the energy level here. I love how the students were not afraid to ask questions. The students were friendly, much friendlier than I experienced in suburban high school.
  • Students were respectful of each other.
  • It was great how the students were in class when the bell rang. the halls were empty when class started.
  • The interaction between the students and the teachers was awesome. I saw some teachers talking and fooling around with students. From where I come from that is pretty uncommon, and I am sure it is uncommon in other places as well. That is a positive effective for students, I'm sure. Most of the teaching styles appeared the same, but they are the type that I am in favor of. There was a lot of writing on the board/overhead and dialogue between the students and teacher.
  • Great school. it's too bad a lot of people have negative assumption about this place without ever entering it. Everything appeared well organized in the halls, lunch room and the classrooms.
  • It was helpful to me to be able to see what it's like in a culturally diverse school, since I came from a town that is not so diverse. It was great getting to talk to students about college. I was actually surprised by all the questions they had. I don't think students from my high school would have gotten so involved in the discussion. These kids seemed like they actually cared and are interested in college. I think these kids get a lot of help here. I didn't get to see how any of these teachers do lectures, but then again seeing the other tools they use was helpful, too.
  • The teachers were all very energetic and were positive even when the students started to act up. The teachers had a good mix between learning/teaching and keeping the class fun and interesting at the same time.
  • Very good for me to be in a school of this particular racial make up, where white is not majority. Also good to visit a school that is in a city as large as Milwaukee. I was nervous at first, but it was a good experience to be an observer in a classroom and to find my way around the building.
  • Schedule was flexible and had a good variety of classes.
  • Safe atmosphere; felt welcome.
  • Teachers were supportive and helpful.
  • The day for myself and the other Stevens Point students was very well organized. Everything was on time and structured.
  • The students and Mr. Rashka have a large amount of energy. It would be difficult to be a teacher here with the students being as animated as they are. I also thought it was great to have an AP Calculus course in high school.(Mine didn't.) The students in that class, though they indicated they were struggling with learning the material, showed a lot of interest in learning, which is the whole point, isn't it?
  • I was very impressed with the attitudes of the teachers. They were all so positive and willing to help students learn. I was amazed by the participation in the physics class. The teacher was so positive. I just wish I could stay that positive from day to day when results may not be what you want to happen or what you expect. I was surprised to even see an AP Calculus class. All I can say is I am so impressed with the learning atmosphere here. Great organization of the day.
  • I was impressed very much by the first class I went to today. It was biology taught by Mrs. Kozlicki. The entire class was actively participating and taking notes the entire hour.
  • Some classes were incredibly organized and the hallway passing time was, too.
  • Teachers were very friendly. Students asked a lot of good questions.
  • Integrated Technology is fantastic!
